Web 1.0 refers to the early days of the internet between the dates of 1989-2005. During this period of time, the internet was a new technology for most people. Personal computers were starting to become popular and home internet connections started to become readily available. During the Web 1.0 era content consumers vastly outnumbered content creators. Content publishing tools were not readily available online or accessible to most internet users. For example, during this period of time, building a basic website required a user to buy website building software, install this software, learn HTML, build a website, provision a web hosting account, FTP the content to the server, and then manually submit the new website to the search engines. Some people refer to this period of time as the “read-only” period of the web since content and website creation were so complicated.
