In cryptocurrency blockchains, the term “vertical scaling” refers to expanding the network’s capacity by increasing the power and memory of the blockchains’ core processing computer. This type of blockchain vertical scaling makes every transaction faster and more efficient. By using extremely powerful supercomputer nodes, the chain can reduce communication overhead and lower both transaction and block latency. The tradeoff to vertical scaling using such powerful nodes is that few people have access to such powerful computers. This can result in more centralization, which is not always ideal for many large open-source, public blockchains.
