On a Proof of Stake (PoS) blockchain, a validator is a person that stakes that blockchain’s native currency or token and participates in the consensus process of transaction validation. Both Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS) share the common goal of running a fast and secure distributed ledger. However, Proof of Stake (PoS) is considered several orders of magnitude more energy-efficient. All Proof of Stake (PoS) validators are required to “stake” or use their holdings of the blockchain’s native token during their operation as a validator. If, at any time, during the course of a validator’s operation, they engage in any behavior deemed negative by the network, the validators will lose a portion or all of their staked funds as a penalty.
