The Ropsten testnet was one of Ethereum’s earliest and most widely used test networks. It used a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism and closely resembled Ethereum Mainnet in behavior, which made it valuable for testing protocol upgrades and complex dApps under more realistic conditions.
Ropsten has been shut down and is no longer maintained. Modern Ethereum development now primarily relies on other testnets such as Goerli and Sepolia, which are designed to support the network’s Proof of Stake era and future scaling roadmap.
