Back to glossary

Symmetric key cryptography, sometimes referred to as symmetric encryption, refers to a type of encryption methodology whereby the same private key is used for both the encryption and decryption of plaintext messages. This method of encrypting and encoding data communications has been used extensively by governments and militaries for decades. The security strength of the asymmetric key cryptography system is dependent on the strength of the private key used. For example, a 128-bit key would take billions of years to brute force using a standard computer system and a 256-bit key is considered by some experts to be resistant to a brute force attack conducted by a quantum computer.
