The term snapshot is most typically associated with taking a backup image of a computer system or hard disk. In the crypto and NFT ecosystem, snapshots refer to recording the state of a particular blockchain at a particular block height. When a blockchain snapshot is taken, the contents of that archive include all blockchain wallet addresses as well as their transaction history.

Blockchain snapshots are also often used for Altcoin and Non-Fungible Token (NFT) airdrops. Regarding cryptocurrency and NFT airdrops, these snapshots enable the team doing the airdrop to find token owners that meet certain criteria, which is desirable to the goals of the project conducting the airdrop. The airdropping team can then airdrop the new tokens or NFTs to the wallet addresses of their chosen audience.
