A noncustodial wallet is a cryptocurrency or NFT wallet where the user controls the private keys instead of relying on a centralized company or exchange. Because no third party can move assets on the user’s behalf, noncustodial wallets align with the core web3 principle of self-custody.
Examples include browser wallets such as MetaMask and mobile or hardware wallets that let you sign transactions locally. The trade-off is that if you lose your keys or recovery phrase, there is no central party who can restore access to your funds and NFTs.
