Back to glossary

In the early days of Bitcoin, a “Brainwallet” describes a user’s private key stored in the person’s memory in the form of a password or a seed phrase. The basic idea is to give you a portable password that can be easily remembered. The main problem is that human beings are not capable of generating enough entropy or randomness to create a truly secure password, resulting in insecure wallets. This problem is compounded by the fact that sophisticated hackers actively try and crack cryptocurrency wallets, and weakly secured wallets can and do get cracked.
