A blockchain is a distributed and decentralized database or digital ledger that stores data across a global network. It can be thought of as a large open spreadsheet consisting of publicly verifiable and immutable information recorded and organized in packages called blocks. The blocks are chained together using cryptography. Blockchain technology is the basis for both cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Transactions on blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum utilize public-key cryptography, which masks the actual identities of the individuals or entities involved. There are protocols within blockchains to ensure that the transactions are valid.
